My 3 chickens have been laying like clock work for about 2 weeks now. 3 good sized eggs every morning. This evening I checked inside the eglu to see if all was dry (heavy rain here today) and found another egg with a soft shell?

Does this happen often? 2 eggs in one day? The soft shell I know happens every now and then but not had an egg in the evening before?

Mine have only just started laying but have had funny things with soft shells when one of mine has laid them. Have had two in one day and a soft one during the night followed by a normal egg the next morning. I think soft ones don't follow the normal 25 hour plus rule

Well after a couple of soft eggs over the last few evenings I wake to three normal eggs this morning!

It's rare but not impossible for a chicken to lay two eggs within 24 hours - especially if they are new and still getting their egg-laying tackle into gear, as it were. Also, soft-shelled eggs may be soft because they passed through too quickly for a proper shell to form.

 

Sounds as if she is settling down into a normal laying pattern.
