cathybc
hello, I have now had my ex-batts about 2 months. Apologies for my ignorance, I am not sure what broody is exactly, but I have looked at other posts and think Harriet might be broody - she has hardly moved out of the nest box for the last couple of days. But, some posts say the hens get bad tempered when broody -she is fine, lets me stoke her all over, making cute little coo-ing noises, and let me dig around under her to collect the eggs - 3 so I am assuming one from each, including harriet. She did seem quite warm. She does not seem to be injured or in pain. Do you think she is just broody ? Or should I take her to see Auntie Molly / Uncle Aidan at the vets.....thoughts from the more experienced would be greatly appreciated. Thank you ! x
surferdog
Certainly sounds like it Cathy. My Sylvie went broodie a couple of weeks ago even though we've only had them 8 weeks. (Like everything else she wasn't very good at it - bless her! First sign of a grape and she was out.) She didn't get grumpy at all and in fact was quite cuddly as a result of being hauled out of the nest box so many times. Christian gave me the fab tip of putting an ice block wrapped up in a tea towel under her. It took a couple of days but she eventually gave up. Now I just make sure I get the eggs out as soon as possible as she does like to sit on them given half a chance...
