jan_novice_chicken_keeper
I've just found this thread, so although a little late, I'm going to add my two penn'eth too . I've got 3 children under 4 and all have been in cloth nappies throughout. Since my 2 year old was born, I've never had less than 2 children in nappies, with 3 all wearing cloth for a few months (my 3 year old has health issues which have made him very late in being able to be potty trained). We tried a range of nappies, many bought second hand (and all we did not like were re-sold), and our favourites are Tots Bots and Motherease (especially Motherease wraps) for total reliability, with fleece liners for comfort as they wick away any wet from the skin leaving it feeling dry. They are still going strong, even the second hand ones. The washing (every day with 3 in nappies, every other day with 2, every 2/3 days with 3) has not been a problem at all (and I am not very good at housework etc ). As we have no problems with leaks, the rest of the washing is less than when we have had to use disposables (on holiday with no washing machine) and have had lots of problems with leaky disposables, so I think it evens out. Another poster said she didn't know how she would feel about the washing if her baby pooed more - 2 of mine have pooed after every feed as breastfed babies, and it has been fine. I do use our dryer occasionally, but only when I have to. We looked carefully at the energy/waste conundrum, but decided in the end that the biggest problem for us was the amount of landfill created by disposables, and the amount of time they are thought to take to degrade. Also, I just didn't like the idea of my children spending 2 or more years with paper nappies against their skin - the fleece just seems much more comfortable-looking. I think I am being a bit soft here though!! www.thenappylady.co.uk has a really good questionnaire for people considering cloth nappies, looking at their attitudes to and facilities for washing/drying nappies and recommending types of nappy which might be suitable. www.twinkleontheweb.co.uk also has some good resources. Mind you, as far as the washing goes - at least chickens don't need nappies Jan
PurpleHen
Another bit of info that may help people browsing here in future.... aBay have now stopped the sale of pre-loved nappies (they count as used underwear and so could be connected to a fetish!!! )... so a new site has been set up for those wanting to buy and sell pre-loved: www.usednappies.co.uk
