I am glad that I am not a chook, I have to say

Hilda and Evadne I have to separate at night. Evadne stays in the eglu in the run and is very sweet to Hilda when she returns to the run in the morning. However, one night, I took out the wrong hen (when they are roosting, I can tell them apart only by their combs, and it was too dark). When, the next morning, I put Evadne back in the run, Hilda was insufferable: walking in front of and under Evadne's chin whenever she approached any of the feeders and generally strutting about saying "my run, my feeders, my spinach".

Today, I watched Hilda taking a dustbath. Evadne was watching too, from the side, and occasionally pecking Hilda who was rolling around ecstatically, as they do. I thought she might be grooming Hilda, although some of the pecks looked as if they would hurt. Suddenly, Evadne had a beakful of feathers and ran to the corner of the run to EAT them. In the same moment, Hilda leapt up from the dustbath and ran up just in time to eat the last - her own - feather herself.

I don't have any tuna in the house at the moment, so if they are short of protein this will have to wait until I can get to the supermarket.
