patchy egg Pics added

Recommended Posts

Hi all one of my girls laid a egg at the weekend which had a bit of poo on it and some white spots so i wiped it with a bit of damp kitchen paper and the colour, which was a red brown colour, wiped of but not completly to show white patches. I have a silkie and a cream legbar who are about 30 and 24 weeks could this have been one of their first eggs? also what makes me think it was them was it was laid on the roosting bars rather than the nest box. thanks

I think I now know what caused this patchy effect. Yesterday I collected an egg that had just been laid and was still damp. I wiped it dry and in doing so removed the top coating/pigment layer. I should have left it to dry as this layer protects the egg and stops nasties from getting through the shell. Anyway, I now have a patchy egg! :D

So it's nothing to worry about, just let your eggs dry off and only wipe them clean if you absolutely have too!
