madchickenlady
One of my girls has taken to tearing off strips of the newspaper I use to catch their poo and eating it I kept finding shredded paper everywhere, but have only just witnessed this bizarre behaviour for myself . Is this going to be a problem?
puffball
hi there! i dont think the newspaper will cause a big issue for now but you should probably try to stop her eating it as it might block her up. not that i'm certain but there you go
mum2boys
mine shred (and eat newspaper) along with plasterboard, plastic bags, polysterene.... we really have to watch what we put outside the backdoor (in a pile to go to the bin/tip/garage) as the girls are quite happy to sit and peck/shred/eat... Hen Watch
Hummmm... maybe worth using something else to line their droppings tray. What about a sprinkling of Auboise/Hemcore? I had a similar problem last year. I thought that one chook was allergic to the Auboise in the nestbox as she had a bald tummy. So as an experiment I switched to shredded newspaper. One chook ate it and at first I thought she would stop once she realised it wasn't food, but she continued and ate so much every day I was worried it would stick in her crop. So I stopped using it. littlegem
Yep mine eat the newspaper out of the droppings tray too and scatter it all round the run, I have stopped putting it in now and just sprinkle some Bokashi Active Bran in the tray. It's easy to sweep out and doesn't matter if they eat it.................
andrewandcarly
i used newspaper on the shed floor for ages with no problems. about 3 months ago they took to shredding it and probably eating it. i used to put 16 pieces down and the next day when i come to replace it there would be about 8 left! i kept thinking one day i would crack an egg in the pan and it would have MCN stamped on the yolk
