Fly Strike

Recommended Posts

I have recently moved my lovely little rabbits into their new 3 story mansion outside and have the new concern of fly strike. They have been out there since Monday and i have noticed a few flies hovering close by - i guess they are probably midgies/mosquito type flies. Just wondered if anyone had any tips on preventing my little ladies from being bothered by flies and any other problems to outdoor living?

Scrupulous hygiene is the key. The flies are attracted to poop, so make sure the hutch is cleaned every day. Check your bunnies' bums at least once a day, preferably twice, and clean off any poo that's stuck to their fur (I use baby wipes, and give my two the occasional trim - they have very furry rear ends!). I also treat mine with a product called Fly Guard which is an insecticide and is supposed to prevent maggots hatching. I have a fly sheet which I put over the hutch when I put the buns away at night, which was from Pets at Home I think. Checking their bums is the most important thing though.

Cool thanks! I have been checking their bums and they are dry, one is just a bit smelly! Since i have moved them outside they seem reluctant to use their litter tray, they used it indoors just fine. Hopefully once they get back into the habbit of using it as a loo instead of a toy to fling around then i can really keep an eye on the poo situation!! I am clearnig out wet sawduct daily though! Fingers crossed i don't run into any problems!

Thanks for the tips.
