Crop worry...

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

After the girls had their afternoon treat (a few grapes - cut up) Dolly my PP seemed to be having a bit of trouble with her crop. They were free ranging, but Dolly seemed to stay still and was adjusting her crop for sometime, jolting her head about. Now I don't know if this is just me being paranoid but her crop seems rather large and positioned quite high. Never noticed this before and was wondereing if anyone with more experience can enlighten me to what this could be.

Many thanks

JB

maybe she's eaten a lot?

does it feel especially hard or squidgy or normal?

have a feel of it in the morning before she eats and if it's empty, don't worry :)

My Gingernuts have much bigger crops than my Pepperpot or Amber Star girls. They are also a lot greedier. Consequently as their crops fill up during the day, I notice it more with the Gingernuts. My girls look slightly different when full from bird to bird. Some are on the left, some right, or on my Pepperpot you can hardly see it. So they do vary.

A normal crop will fill during the day and be biggest by evening, then empty overnight. So you may find what you are describing is normal and nothing to worry about.

The only time to worry is if it doesn't empty or is still full the next day. If you look at the crop problem post in FAQ, Claret has used a picture of my Henny when she had crop problems last year. Her crop was huge even first thing in the morning and would swing like a pendulum.

Hi guys thanks for all the help and reassurance. Everything seems fine this morning, they were both in such a rush to get out of the eglu when the door opened I knew straight away she was fine. I think their problem is that they love grapes so much they swallow them whole regardless of the size! Will be cutting them into quarters now instead of halves!

Once again thanks, its great to know you can log on and get help.

Happy Easter
