poorly chicken! help please

Recommended Posts

hi all

got our 3 girls at pol just before xmas.

but recently not been getting as many eggs (for a week or so)and one of todays eggs were white in colour and rough textured, smaller than usual-

then later on today one of them retired to her eglu and stayed there for hours- i went out to check on her and she came out and was very lethargic and quiet.

she just sat in the garden quietly and didnt even come over for some corn or treats (very unusual)

what should i do?

ant help greatly appreciated- shes not very old so im rather confused?

Hi Katie,

We had a similar situation with our Gingernut ranger a few months into her laying. Our hen was egg-bound (got an egg stuck). She was very withdrawn, off her food - even treats, in and out of the nesting box all day, and straining towards the end of the 'ordeal'.

We let our hen pass her egg natuarally, although I did look for lots of information and was about to take action when she passed it. Quite a few people suggested holding her over hot water so that the steam relaxes her and the egg can pass. Another idea that was suggested was rubbing some sort of lubrication around the vent - I'm sure someone advised olive oil, but hang fire on that until someone with more experienced knowledge comes along.

Where did you get your hens from? Could you contact the breeder and ask for their advice.

If you do see an egg stuck in her vent, don't break it as this will lead to infection.

I hope she gets well soon. Thinking of you (and her!)
