Please help our little Pheebs

Recommended Posts

I've put a few posts on this week about Phoebe - she is still unwell and we don't know whats wrong with her :( She hasn't laid for 1 week (always had a softie problem), is doing running brown coloured poo's, and is only eating a tiny amount of cereal or rice pudding. She has seen a vet 2x this week, and they can't find anything wrong except a lump, when he feels up her vent, in all other ways he says she is well. She has been put on a course of strong broad spectrum antibiotics (a crushed tablet in 20mls of water 3x daily  ). But there is no improvement. She has spent all week sitting in the kitchen. Its so sad, we love her so much and are geting desparate to find out whats wrong with her. She might be going in for blood tests and potentially a biopsy today, but to be honest I'm not really sure the vet knows enouugh about chickens, and he was the best we could find. Has anybody got any ideas? In herself she looks well, and is having plenty of fluid with the antibiotics, but I don't know how long she can last on so little food. She purrs each time we come into the room, and still loves a cuddle, Daphne comes in to visit her and sits by her side :( Has anybody got any ideas.

sorry to hear about pheebs...do you worm them regularly? if he feels a lump it could be a stuck egg, try sprinkling some nutrabol on her food, it's a calcium supplement and should help with her contractions.

I agree with Poet, was going to say the same thing...

Post your location & perhaps someone can make a suggestion about another vet.

My Vet just removed a stuck shell, and on the way home she did the next softee, then the next morning the next softee!!!!

Today nothing which is good, although this girl is proner to the odd weird layiong spell I am hoping it is down to the weather...

Oh then I remebered Egluntine! :)

Has she been womed? Yes in my case.

Have you checked for lice? Um NO.... and guess what? visitors. :!:

!!!!

If there is a stuck shell or bits then the antibiotic wiill help stave off an infection till it is out by whatever means!

Perhaps ask your vet for some anti inflamitory Metacam is often given to chickens I have read and have been given!

Could he/ she not get it out?

what is your nearest town chickaboo, someone may know of a vet that is brill in a direction you hadn't thought of!

the crinched up shell asfter 2 days stunk something awful, sorry cannot recall other posts how long this has been going on.

I had a girl very poorly despite exp vet trying on3 separate ossasions days apart could not shift this lump.

She took over 2 weeks in all. (were going to operate but snow stopped movement, but not for her :) a happy outcome on that occasion for her!

With that in mind I would say try not to let her get dehydrated.

get some oral daktain incase her cvrop starts to go sour.

Citricidal in her water.

Apple puree is good to there is conflicting advice on ACV once it has gone sour. Avipro.

And lots of luck fingers crossed!

She is having her antibiotics 3x daily with 10mls + of water mixed in each time, so she is getting plenty of fluid. Do you mean Daktarin (the human treatment for fungal infections) sandyhas3chooks? If so, I will go and buy some. I live in north herts, and would be prepared to travel.

yes the human sort, only cost £5 ish always useful to have incase her crop goes sour while she is blocked.

I live in Surrey, and someone could recommend a vet an hour or 2 even away, that is why I suggest you put your nearesr town... :) you never know....

good she is getting the fluid! :)

Lets hope she shifts it herself like my little Moe did, or you find a vet that could get it out.

have you tried the search facility on the rsv vet site? and the list of recommended vets on here? PP also have a list, I don't think you need to registerto have a look!
