Please Help ... Poorly Duck ...

Recommended Posts

I have a Cherry Valley duck who is 3 years old, about 2 years ago she was attached by a dog and was very poorly for a while but has thankfully recovered after lots of TLC.

Ever since the attach she has been a little unsteady, a bit of a plodder when walking and can not run around like her sister. For the last couple of weeks she has been more unsteady on her feet and frequently falls over or on occassion looks like she trips over her own feet!!

Although she seems happy enough, eats and looks perky I still worry about her not being able to get around. She cant run around with her sister and has to quite often take a break and sit down, does anyone have any ideas what it might be and suggestions on treatment!!???

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Strange that it is a long time ago the attack, ducks are prone to leg and feet injury. Not sure what your set up is, but I would keep her in where she can still see her friend,so she doesnt get stressed at all, ie just limit the space she is use to and try to get her to rest for a couple of days. Otherwise vets, if its anything serious ie a break very hard to treat. She may just be having an off day. Keep her quiet etc. Doesnt sound like normal behaviour to be tripping over.

If she is distressed or seems in discomfort you do need to seek help, they are good at hiding it. Hope after a rest she picks up, usually I find if your gut instinct tells you there is something not right you are probably right. Check her over especially to see if she has any sores /cuts on her feet?

good luck indie :)

Thank you Indie.

She went to the vets a couple of weeks ago when she first started looking a bit of colour they checked her feet, joints etc and said they all looked fine.

They supplied me some Baytril which she has now finished.

I will take your advise and check her feet and legs again and keep her penned in for a few days and see how she is or back to the vets on Tuesday.

Thank you again for you help.

HI

I know in the past I have taken ducks etc to the vets and temporarily ie steroid injections and antibiotics worked but I still found resting (in view of their mates if poss) the best thing.Trouble is by confining to barracks it can stress animals etc so its sort of trying to find a happy medium. If she gets really sad and down(again animals usually hide things pretty good) may end up having her culled, sorry to say it but see how she goes. Its really hard for vets to sort out sometimes!

Fingers crossed she will recover etc.

Good luck again indie
