Chicken Dementia!!

Recommended Posts

Hi

One of our chickens (Bunty) seems to have become very disorientated over the last week. She is only 1 year old but on Friday just gone, we thought she had been taken\escaped as she was not in the coop at bed time only to find her an hour later fast asleep under an ivy bush.

Yesterday I filled the feeder in the coop and all the other chickens ran through the "Run" to the coop and tucked in while Bunty go in a real tizz trying to feed through the bars from the outside of the coop.

Tonight she failed to find her way from the "Run" into the coop which is only 30cm away through a tunnel and just stood there making a real din until i flushed her throught the tunnel and it still took a minute for her to work out that she was home!!

All 4 girls have been with us since Aug last year and have done the trip hundreds of times, nothing has moved or changed, "Coop" then "Run" then "Garden"

Can chickens have mental problems? Any idea what this could be?

I will check her eyes tomorrow but she can see me coming from a mile away.

Thanks for your help.

TH

My girls often confuse themselves by trying to get into the run through the mesh rather than the door. I think that their chicken brains get addled at the thought of missing out on possible treats and they forget what to do and where to go.

I wouldn't worry too much just yet, TH.

It's good to see someone from Sleaford on here. I grew up there and my Mum still lives in the town. :D
