Old Budgies.... advice please

Recommended Posts

Hia Folks

We have two budgies that are 10 years old. Both look old now, feathers scrawny etc, but still chirp happily, eat + drink etc.

One of the budgies has had a huge warty growth at the bottom of his tummy for the last couple of years. It all looks to be on the outside of his body, but I only say that because he doesnt "look" in any pain with it. He chirps, feeds and drinks. Only problem is, if he catches his warty growth on the cage bars, it can bleed. Only a few drops (something like once a week) but even that is a large amount for such a small bird. One day it bled quite a lot. He went a bit quiet for a couple of hours, then he perked up again.

I am concerned that I may cruel keeping the "warty" one alive. But the other one would suffer if his friend died. I am hoping they will die naturally, but we go away for two weeks in August, and I am worried about the pet sitter (probably my Mom, or a neighbour) might encounter some issues and feel bad if the bird(s) die in their care.

The tumour may well be causing your elderly budgie some discomfort. You are quite right that a little blood loss can cause quite a problem in little birds such a budgies. Unfortunatley whilst we would all love for our pets to go peacefully in their sleep, they rarely do and it is more than often necessary to make a difficult decison to prevent suffering. Things do also have a habit of going wrong when other people are looking after them
