No shells on the eggs

Recommended Posts

Hi, I have my first two ever two chickens Mildred and Myrtle and they are just great, I am still not sure who is laying which egg, they are approximately 24 weeks old and being laying for about two weeks. Some days I get two and others one. My one concern is that sometimes one of the eggs has no shell. They are being fed on a mixture of layer mash and pellets, with a scoop of seaweed daily and plenty of oyster shell and fresh water available, they have free range of the garden after 12 until bedtime. A small handful of corn if they pester me nicely about 4pm! They were getting some greens, spinach and kale daily, this stopped on Saturday when my neighbour showed me an article in the newspaper saying spinach can cause calcium to form in the gut instead of around the egg. Is this true of all greens? How long does it take for the spinach to get out of the system and is there anything else I can do to solve this problem? Can I still eat the soft egg? They are extremely happy chickens have settled in well with the dogs and cats, they are now top of the pecking order!! I have yet to see them stressed over anything.
