meganpip
We have only had our two since Monday but we got a soft shell egg on the first day from the larger one (Hetty). She laid this first one on the grass inside the run and this morning when I checked there was another soft shell egg inside the eglu but it had been laid on the roosting bars and was broken. The egg itself appeared to be whole on the dropping tray so I hope it was merely stood on instead of pecked at. Does anybody have a tip on encouraging Hetty to lay in the nest box. It is well lined with straw and looks cosy enough to me. Meganpip
Couperwife
Hi Meganpip happy new chickens you can get little ceramic or rubber eggs to put in the nest box, these seem to convince the chooks that this is the right place to lay, but as she is new she could have been caught short and had a bit of a shock with her laying ive also heard of people putting real eggs in the nesting box too (shop bought ones if you dont have any "home laid") to show the girls where to lay. I must say - the nesting box sounds cosy to me too hope this is helpful cathy x
