troyca
I have conventional hives . I wondered how the Beehaus accomodates the need to add extra supers. Do you put extras on top in a stacking arrangement like conventional hives? How do you cope with a bumper season where lots of supers are required? Guest
With a full complement of 14 x 12 frames and 4 half supers one can easily store well over 50kgs on the hive. Extracting those 14 x 12s is a different matter. I usually use National shallow supers on my Dartingtons and have not yet needed to worry about the beehaus. If there is a lot of honey in 14 x 12s I usually redistribute to other, needier, colonies. If they don't use it over-wintering, I will get it back as part of next year's crop..... If a bumper year, either more supers or extract those already filled. For me, there are two extractions each year, at least. One for the OSR as soon as the flow has gone over and the other in late summer. Try this link for size! It's big, like the Dartington shown towards the bottom of the page!! http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_O_i1nSQ4oKE/RssdKX6DJmI/AAAAAAAAABo/93ZQrPtvukw/s320/DSC08467s.jpg&imgrefurl=http://hertsbees.blogspot.com/2007/08/hitchin-bee-centre-news-by-robin.html&usg=__LqZbX_7ut8MaerOZeojtbw9YJAw=&h=240&w=320&sz=34&hl=en&start=160&zoom=1&itbs=1&tbnid=TCluST_kWABEhM:&tbnh=89&tbnw=118&prev=/images%3Fq%3Ddartington%2Bhive%26start%3D144%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DN%26gbv%3D2%26ndsp%3D18%26tbs%3Disch:1'>http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_O_i1nSQ4oKE/RssdKX6DJmI/AAAAAAAAABo/93ZQrPtvukw/s320/DSC08467s.jpg&imgrefurl=http://hertsbees.blogspot.com/2007/08/hitchin-bee-centre-news-by-robin.html&usg=__LqZbX_7ut8MaerOZeojtbw9YJAw=&h=240&w=320&sz=34&hl=en&start=160&zoom=1&itbs=1&tbnid=TCluST_kWABEhM:&tbnh=89&tbnw=118&prev=/images%3Fq%3Ddartington%2Bhive%26start%3D144%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DN%26gbv%3D2%26ndsp%3D18%26tbs%3Disch:1 or this one if you need to type it in your browser! http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_O_i1nSQ4oKE/RssdKX6DJmI/AAAAAAAAABo/93ZQrPtvukw/s320/DSC08467s.jpg Regards, RAB
