WildeWoman
My last remaining ex-battery hen is not well and I just can't put my finger on it; it may be that it is just age, but suggestions would be appreciated. She is about three years old now. She would not come out of the cube yesterday and when we investigated she was very cold, her comb was very pale/purplish and she couldn't stand. We have bought her into the house and she had picked up by this morning so we allowed her access to the others in the garden; they were fine with her, but she just sat motionless by the back door so she is back in a box in the kitchen. I have literally just found what appear to be lice on her - I will treat now, but could these be the cause of her problem, or secondary? Any thoughts appreciated. Chucky Mama
The lice may be opportunistic. There may well be something else going on too. Any abdominal swelling/fluid?
WildeWoman
No - no sign of anything else abnormal on her.
Chucky Mama
Tricky one She certainly needs to have the lice treated and then it is a toss up whether to nurse her at home or to take her to the vet who may give her a course of antibiotics. WildeWoman
I'm treating the lice now, but think I will pop her to the vets in the morning if she is no better. Thanks.
