RobJo
Hi please can you advise, We purchased 4 Blackrocks about 6 weeks ago and today something strange happened, I was in the kitchen when I heard the hens making strange noises, I looked outside and they were going crazy in their run and unfortunately 3 out of the 4 hens cut open their beaks, one was bleeding more than the other 2 so all I did was pat their beaks with tissue and then they would not return to the run or coop, I rounded them up and placed them in the coop and locked it for an hour then let them out again, 1 hen (Ruby) after 10 mins in the run started to make loud noises again and started the other hens off again, I am concerned about them bleeding? is there something I should have done or have if this happens again and are the noises a possible sign that Ruby may be ready to lay as non of them have layed yet which is not really a concern as they are firstly pets than just with us to lay eggs. They are also sleeping in the nest box, well 3 of them and one on the perch up close to the other 3. The hens bashed themsleves into the run which I presume cut open their beaks, they acted like they were spooked!
Olly
gosh, I'd try and found out how they cut their beaks, because there must be something sharp around the run that perhaps shouldn't be there. I wonder if something like a cat, or possibly a fox, came close to the run and caused them to panic?
