My first attempt with the incubator - Help needed!

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Just received our first 6 White Call Duck eggs from the courier! My manual incubator has been on for the past few days so I could monitor and adjust the settings.

At the moment, it's sitting at 101.5 degrees F and approx and humidity at 55 percent.

My questions are:

Are these settings ok for incubating my eggs? If not, what should they be.

Best way to set eggs before incubating as I plan to put them in the incubator tomorrow.

Regards

Hi,

I've only ever incubated campbell and aylesbury duck eggs but I normally set the temp at 99.5 F and humidity at approx 45 - 50%. However, from what I've read I've heard that call duck eggs can be quite hard to hatch in an incubator. I usually just set the eggs with the pointy end down at room temp before setting them in the incubator. Some people turn them whilst storing them but I've never bothered. The only adjustments I make are to the humidity levels every few days depending on how well the air sac is developing. I've found that If I had used the setting recommended in books or in the manual the air sac would either be way too big or too small. If you look at the air sac diagrams on the internet they show you the approx size it should be as the incubation continues getting bigger as the incubation progresses. I just try to adjust the humidity to try to end up with the correct size air sac. When the eggs start to pip externally I then increase humidity to approx 65 - 70%.

I've always had a hatch rate of over 80% by following the above using manual and automatic incubators.

I hope that helps. Good luck with the hatch.

James :)

I'd say that might be slightly too hot, I'd say keep the temp around 99.5 or 100F, I'd also spray the eggs daily with warm water as i find they can dry out in a manual incubator and they can have problems hatching. Also as well as turning them daily make sure you rotate them to avoid hot and cold spots in the incubator.

Good Luck!!!!
