chickenopolis
We have had Dolly for about 6 weeks, and over the last couple of weeks, Dolly has been occasionnaly shaking her head, which I took no real notice of: we thought that she was just shaking herself down after a run in with Gloria, as I think Dolly is the bottom of the pecking order of our 4 ladies. However, last night, I came home, and she could hardly stand. Got her to the Vets, who said that they couldn't feel anything out of the ordinary. I said we were worming with Flub and I had cut down on treats as we have had no eggs from her for over a week. Vet said she was concerned about Dolly's balance and prescribed Baytril for a week, which I mixed with some sultanas last night, which she gobbled down. Possible ear infection, which would explain the twitching head. This morning she seemed worse, and I managed to squirt the prescribed Baytril down her throat - we put her in the cat carrier and have put her in the kitchen. She has some chopped up sultanas and some Baytril on this and some water which she hasn't touched, I don't think. She is sitting down, closing her eyes one minute, and then standing up with her eyes open the next. She occasionnaly makes her usual squeaking noise, when I sit in the floor and talk to her. I know that the Baytril has to take it's time to work, but should we be doing something else as well. Her poos are loose, a bit yellow and green, but she was munching down some grass yesterday morning. If she is no better I will go back to Vets on Monday, but has anyone got any ideas to help in the meantime. Thank you. Sarah
chickenopolis
I may be talking too soon as Dolly hasn't completed a full weeks course of Baytril, but my goodness, it's powerful stuff isn't it....., only giving her 0.8ml a day, but she is like a new chook. Even stealing grapes off Gloria, which is unheard of in our garden. She is still shaking her head, but so much less than she was on Friday. Her vision is still a bit off, she dives for a sultana and misses, but gets it eventually. Last night, she was sitting in the nest box with Margo, and when I went to give them a night night kiss (yes, I know..... ), Margo had her wing over Dolly - it was lovely to see. skye
Hi chickenopolis, Sorry to hear Dolly hasn't been feeling well. They always seem to do that head twitching thing for all kinds of ailments! Little soul sounds like she was quite poorly, but Baytril is picking her up - that's great! We have one on Baytril as well who has quickly cottoned on to the fact that grapes taste awful when soaked in medicine, so I also had to pin mine down, put my finger between her upper and lower beak to hold it open, and syringe it into her mouth this morning before work! (I don't think either of us were impressed.) I have read somewhere though that you need to be careful when syringing in case it goes into the windpipe – so once I had the syringe in her beak, I just slowly pressed the liquid into her mouth so it just trickled in... got it all to come again this evening again joy! Hope Dolly continues to run around stealing grapes and going from strength to strength skye x
