Eggs with no shells!!

Recommended Posts

Hi

Could do with abit of advice. We have 4 girls aged approx 21 weeks. One has been laying for about a week and one just for a couple of days. The other 2 have very small combs and I don't think will lay for a while yet. For the past few days we have been getting 2 eggs. I have been to collect this morning and there is 1 good egg and 2 without shells.(the other layer doesn't lay until later in the afternoon) What do you think is going on? What causes the eggs to be laid without the shells and what can we do to put it right? Thanks guys.

Don't worry, at this age it is just a blip in the laying process - the egg has travelled too quickly through the system, and didn't get the shell applied.

Older hens sometimes lay soft-shelled eggs, and in that case it can indicate a lack of calcium and you can feed supplements, but with hens as young as yours I wouldn't worry - they will probably all be laying good eggs in a week or two.
