New to this .... quails that is !

Recommended Posts

Just about to pick up 4 ladies, and one chap this week, have got an ebay coop for them which will be placed half on paving and half on dirt, and will be moved onto grass once a week. The coop has a built in run, and a lockable nesting area up a ramp which I will endeavour to get them into at night.

They are approx. 2-3 weeks old, and will start them on chick crumb mixed with garvos quail mix. Giving them greens and apples etc when I can.

Am I on the right track with doing this?

Any suggestions please....

Hi there - I'd be interested to hear how you've got on. We discovered quite early on that quail won't go away at night - and with their skittishness any attempts to move our run would probably result in a major break out!

Hi Ade,

Well 6 weeks on, and it has been a major learning curve being a first-time quail "Mum". I ended up with 5 gels! The coop has to be kept on the slabs all the time and was obviously too small within weeks of the gels arrival, as they don't go upstairs to roost or lay, and use the ladder upto the nesting box as a ski ramp. So the enclosed run became the sleeping/eating/exercise area. When it came to cleaning I moved the coop manually and slightly not to spook them - not easy. That bit was written in the past, as I had to give them more run-room so I got an collapsible enclosed rabbit run which has a top / front doors, plus 2 side trap doors and is linked to the coop each day - quite easily too, allowing them access to grass etc. A piece of board is placed over the front door to keep them in so making it easy for the cleaning of the coop and sanitising of the slabs each week. The gels love the run, and go in most days. To get them in, I make sure their main food is always in the coop and their drug of choice are meal worms they will do anything for them.

They are happy, but they all show the [what I now know are] normal quail traits, and the 3 oldest are now laying each day.....

Hope all goes well for you
