It means a calendar year. Pure breeds take time off in the winter, so if they said "100 eggs a year" people would expect two a week, whereas in fact it is five a week in the laying season tailing off to none at all.

 

But I would substitute "should" for "will", which is too positive. My pure-bred hens never laid anything like what they should have. My new hybrids, however, are laying like troopers.
