Sarattie
Mine have just started to lay, well two of them! I put hay in the next bit which they enjoyed kicking round the run. Now I put shavings in but again they just get kicked out. So usually in the morning I have an empty box with 2 dirty eggs in (which I think im right in thinking you font wash or eat? ) Any ideas how to get ckean eggs!??! Olly
I use moss (raked up by a friend who's a gardener!) in mine, you may find aubiose or something smaller gets kicked out less, and they may kick it about a bit less once they are settled down and laying regularly. Dirty eggs are fine - whilst it's not recommended to wash eggs if you don't need to, my hens sleep in the nestbox and the eggs are usually too filthy to put on the skelter. Just wash them gently in warm water, rub with a dishcloth or a bit of kitchen roll if necessary, and dry them, they'll be fine - especially if you're going to use them fairly soon. The reason for not washing them is that it removes the protective coating on the shell.
