JamesK
Hi all, I've been meaning for a while to get something down on the floor of my chicken run and have read that bark is no good as it can cause respiratory problems. I've just been offered a free load of Wellingtonia wood chips (aka giant redwood, aka Sequoiadendron.) Does anyone know if this kind of wood chip is ok? I'm really hoping so as it would be a shame to turn down a nice freebie Cheers JK
PixieDust
I am not sure about the giant redwood and chickens, though this US site suggests it is toxic to chickens. http://beautyofbirds.com/chickenpets.html I did want to impart that anyone who gets their wood chippings from a tree surgeon will be getting wood and bark that has been placed through a chipper. I know this because OH is a fully qualified tree surgeon and he said it would cost too much for the bark to be removed. It just isn't done. So please remember that bark chippings are indeed included in the majority of wood chips used in runs.
