Pullets first egg shelless and the next is just a yolk?

Recommended Posts

Good Morning,

I am quite concerned about one of her hens. She was acting quite subdued yesterday evening, I checked her over and physically she seemed fine so I put it down to tiredness after a day in the garden.

When we put them to bed last night I noticed she was in the nest box (her comb is not yet bright red so I wasn't expecting her to pay for a while), she got up to roost and we noticed what we think may have been her first egg. It was shelless, she seemed brighter so I just put it down to it being her first lay. When I let them out this morning there was a yolk in the nest box. I am assuming it was Bluebell again. I am now a little concerned due to the small amount of time between lays and the state of the 'eggs'.

She seems fine in herself but if anyone he any advice I would appreciate it. I am considering taking her to the vets at the moment.

Many thanks for your help BB

Sorry you have waited all day for a reply - I think she will be fine and I wouldn't take her to the vet if she is eating, drinking and otherwise looking ok.

This is not unusual for pullets coming into lay - the eggs are just moving through her system too quickly for a shell to be formed. Laying a 'soft' egg can make a hen look quite off-colour but they usually perk up as soon as its out. I would bet that within a few days she'll have slowed down a bit and be laying on a more normal daily cycle.
