Missing Call Duck

Recommended Posts

Hi,

New to the site and unfortunately it's not for the right reason :(

We are watching our neighbour's 2 male call ducks while she is on holiday. A couple of days ago, we noticed that they were not running over for their feed as normal and one was constantly pecking at the other!

Yesterday, early morning as usual my partner went to feed them and the one who was being constantly attacked has gone.

I wondered if the first was attacking it because it knew that the second was not well? I can find no sign of any struggle so I think that either it left (although the wings have been clipped - I don't know whether they were due again?), or the only other thing I can think of is that maybe it died or became very week and Mr Oppurtunist Buzzard decided to take advantage of an easy breakfast?

Any help, ideas, thoughts etc would be gratefully received.

Just not looking forward to breaking the news to our neighbour when she returns

Welcome to the forum John - sorry it isn't uder happier circumstances.

It may be that the other duck has just gone off somewhere to get away from the nastiness and may come back again. It could have been because they were both male - are there any females?

It's difficult when you are looking after animals for neighbours, but I'm sure they will understand that there was nothing you could have done to prevent it.

I hope the duck comes back soon.....

Hi, thanks for the welcome.

I would be suprised if the duck did leave 'volountarily' as they are in an area which has a fence of around 4' and we have never seen them able to fly properly, as I said they have both been clipped. The area is very secure as she has had losses due to rats in the past but like I said there is no evidence of any fox/rat/badger presence. That is why I can only imagine a vertical exit!.

The remaining duck keeps wandering round calling for the other which is why I think it may be other reasons.
