Two first eggs (one pecked), then two more. But who done it?

Recommended Posts

I think my Pepperpots may be playing mind games! :?

On the 28th, eleven days after their arrival, I spotted not one but two eggs on the roosting bars. One was a torpedo shaped 55g and the other was a perfectly formed 35g. I guessed that they were laid by Biccie and Toffee as their combs are the reddest.

The torpedo shaped egg may well have been laid first as one end was pecked. It seems to make sense that the second hen to lay pecked the first egg out of curiosity.

On the 29th, there was another perfectly formed 35g egg in the nesting box. And today (30th) another perfectly formed 35g egg but on the roosting bars. :?

If the lovely 35g eggs are all from the same chook, why didn't she lay today's egg in the nesting box? Each of those eggs is a shade darker every day--which is great and makes me think that all three were laid by Toffee as she was the one kicking up a fuss today.

Just to add to the general confusion, the pecked egg now looks healed! :?

Aw, the torpedo shaped one is probably a double yolker - shame they

pecked it.

If they keep pecking them you might have to blow on of the eggs and fill the shell with something nasty tasting, like mustard or chilli so that they go off the idea. Or you could try a solid egg made of rubber or china that they can't damage so that they get bored.

They may have been caught short if the nesting box was already occupied.

Thanks, ajm. Actually, I may take a chance on the torpedo egg. The inner membrane didn't seem to be affected by the peck and the fact that it "pulled itself together" seems to confirm that. However, I will wait to see if the consensus is not to eat it. :vom:

I have now placed a marble egg in the nesting box, both to encourage them to lay there and to discourage pecking!

I am totally amazed to have eggs so quickly. Still have some store bought free range to use up!
