Quick Question - rabbit's nails/claws

Recommended Posts

Hiya,

I have two gorgeous grey/brown lops which were bought off a friend - 2 puppies proved too much for her to look after as well as 2 rabbits. I've had them for about 2 months now, and still getting to grips with having two more in the family!

My question(s):

1:Their nails/claws are quite long, should i clip them? Or take them to a vet?

2: One of them has had a gammy eye for a couple of days. washed it with salt water and it cleared up, but has began to come back, should i give up trying to help and take her to the vets?

Thanks all for reading :)

Claws are really easy to do in light-coloured rabbits. Look at the nail and you'll see it's transparent - about half way down there's a pink bit, called the quick. This is the live bit of the nail, which you don't want to cut - it'll hurt your bunny and bleed a lot. Anything above the quick is dead nail, like our own nail tips, and can be clipped back - I use human toenail clippers. If your bunny will lie on its back it's very easy to do, but if you have a wriggler it might be best asking the vet to do it. Be careful with black claws as you can't see the quick - I save the black ones til last so I know how much I've trimmed off the white ones as a guide.

Rabbits sometimes get "sleep" in their eyes, but they shouldn't be really watery. They are prone to eye infections as they don't produce many tears naturally to clean their eyes (this is sadly why rabbits were used in those awful experiements to test shampoos :( ) so take it to the vet if it doesn't improve. Bathing it with boiled-then-cooled water should be enough in the meantime.

Thank you all for your replies.

I've meant to put this post on sooner, but things have been busy at home!

Got some eye gel from pets at home because eye wasnt getting better - both eyes are fine now! :D

And both rabbits now have more appropriatly lengthed claws

Anyway, thanks for your comments :)
