2 laying - intact yolks broken shells

Recommended Posts

Well I think I might have two laying now - went to let them out this morning and had one egg broken in the droppings tray and another broken on top of the roosting bars. I think the shells were still a bit thin- will need to start on shellstim or lime flour stuff.

Yolks were a lovely colour and intact -does this imply that they were just broken due to the thin shells and not pecked by other hens?

Haven't a clue now who is laying as Roast went to the nesting box for each of her first eggs, maybe she still just didn't know they were coming or couldn't get there with Gemma in the there

You'll just have to stake out the nestbox to see who's doing what ! I was doing really well idnetifying whose egg belonged to who, until Elsie started laying again and changed egg colour to confuse me, think I'm almost there now, though it's very annoying not knowing who is laying what:lol:

Going by my chooks, I would think the softies are down to a new layer who hasn't got it right yet, rather than a lack of limestone etc, if your other chook is laying hard shells I think this would be most likely.

All mine are laying now and the only 2 softies I've had were from Pepper before she laid her first hard shell, so am hoping she's got it right now and won't get any more softies.

Okay will wait and see and try and stalk out - bit difficult though as have two young kiddies and we are out and about quite a bit. Hopefully one will try and lay this afternoon.

I'm not sure if it is two different hens or the same one - just two thin shells being laid overnight made me think it was. Roast laid two hard shelled eggs but small over 4 days - it might not be her laying now but another and she is still on a gap (had a two day gap before  ).

Will stalk all day tomorrow if I can't work it out today

Couldn't get the limestone flour anyway - shop was out but will get some for me. Owner thought it might just be the hen getting used to laying as well.

Might crush some cooked egg shells and use those!
