jenny b
Hi, am being cheeky and have 2 questions!! We have just hatched out 8 RIR chicks from our own pure breed girls and cock. 5 are black and 3 are ginger/ yellow!! Is this normal?? we thought our cock had been playing away!! is this a way of determining sex??? ALSO... our RIR cock has a huge red comb which has looked a little purpley towards the back today! is he ok?? Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Egluntyne
Are the parents pure RIRs? The chicks should be reddish tan coloured with two brown stripes down the back, and they are not an auto sexing breed. Any boys will have pointy feathers around the hackle, as opposed to rounded feathers in the female. The boys will be sturdier and have chunkier legs, and a more well developed comb (and later on, wattles) The girls feather up quicker after their moult. You will have got happy homes lined up already for any boys.
jenny b
As far as I know the paretns are pure RIRs, they certainly look it!! Some chicks are actually black with either cream fluffs or tan fluffs and the others are yellow ans tan. Is it possible that these could be the result of other brreds being involved way bakc in the parentage??
