One quick question before I go to work....

Recommended Posts

We are going to put the new gilrls with Henrietta and Olivia tomorrow - is it best to do this in the walk in run or while free ranging? If in the run should we let our new girls free range later (we were advised to wait two weeks but I would like to let them out this weekend) :?

I would do it whilst they are free ranging. That way they can escape any unpleasantness.

If they have been getting used to each other, you may find, as I did, that there will be a horrible half hour and then it settles and there will just be the odd cursory peck to remind everyone who is boss.

I would supervise, broom at the ready to separate any real nastiness, and have a few treats to hand as distractions.

I am a great believer that shared food is a great team building exercise.

You may notice fewer eggs the next day, as a protest.

Best of luck.

Free ranging definitely, that way they can escape from each other and there's a reduced chance of a newbie getting cornered and attacked by the established flock. I'd do very much as Egluntine says and keep a watchful eye, but basically let them get on with it.

Good luck , I hope they all settle down well :D
