3 Egg day - 1 is a softee

Recommended Posts

Hi all

I had my first 2 egg day yesterday  , but around 10.00 pm, I noticed that one of my girls had laid an egg on the grass outside of their run. It looked perfect but had a soft shell  . As I picked it up it broke and the girls thought it would be great to eat it. Do you think that this may pose a problem - will they get the taste for eating their own eggs?

Any advice would be great.

We had a couple of softees laid on the grass and the girls decided they would eat them (I only noticed as I wondered what the commotion was as one raced around the garden with half an egg in her beak being chased by the other two.) They haven't tried to eat "normal" eggs so I'm not sure they realise they are the same.

I certainly won't be breaking a raw egg into a saucer for them just in case they work it out!

Add a bit of limestone flour to their diet and it should sort out any soft shell problems, but it's quite normal for new layers to lay softees initially.
