Sorre I haven't been around for a while, real life gets in the way as they say... I've posted this before but fear is getting in the way....I really need to clip my girls wings because one of them got onto my fence today...it put the fear of god into me because if she had flown down the wrong side she'd have been a goner by next doors dogs!!

 

I've read all the litrature on omlet and in my books but I am finding it really hard to look at my girls nd identify their secondary wing feathers....does anyone live nearby that will come do this for me haha!!

 

What have you all done?

I had to do my two new girls last night as Cartier cleared a fence no problem

 

Do it after they've gone to bed and they'll be easier to handle. Spread out one of the wings and you'll see the big main flight feathers first and then further up the wing towards the body are the secondary feathers that make a layer over the top of the main ones. You just need a sharp pair of scissors and cut the main ones about a centimetre below where the second layer ones begin. It sounds daunting but is really easier than you think!

The printed Omlet guide which I got with my chooks has a far better picture in it than in their guide online. I can't find this pic on their website but I found another website with a really good picture on it showing the wing fanned out.

I wing clipped myself and it's actually easy (as long as someone else is holding the chook). The printed Omlet guide I have says "a good guide is to cut the first 6-7 feathers back as far as the tips of the next line of feathers".

That website link is really usefull. I clipped the wing of my newest chicken yesterday and wasn't 100% sure I'd done it correctly as she still seems to be having a good go at flying! Having looked at the picture, I'm pleased to say that I have chopped the right bits off! Looks like she's just a bit better at gaining altitude than the others.

Sandy, I had 1 "flyer" and initially when I clipped her wing it didn't make much difference. But she was younger and lighter back then. She now doesn't clear the same heights that she used to last year. So there maybe hope yet for your girl.......

That's good to know. She is a bit lighter and younger than the others at the moment. I'll have to hope she gets heavier before she figures out how to clear the fence!
