Sticky out wings

Recommended Posts

Layla has been laying progressively later and later each day, she has just spent two hours on the nest box having laid.

I have just lifted her out on the suspicion she is going broody, making a funny noise aswell as sitting for along time.

She is now hugging the shade in the garden and is walking with sticky out wings.

Do you think she is going broody?

She looks well and has been laying daily for a few weeks.

Hi Joegg

We have a Layla as well! (although she is GNR) I'm not sure about the broodyness, but our Layla sticks to the shade and lifts up her wings when she is hot, as if she's airing her armpits!

It's a very hot day here - perhaps it is where you are too? Having said that, I think a hen's temperature rises when it's broody - I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will be along soon to confirm this.

Cheers

Skye

If she wants to stay in the nest after she's laid and makes strange noises when you lift her out she could well be showing signs of being broody! The heat wont be helping and the sticky out wings are her trying to keep cool.

Keep an eye on her - the fact she hasn't dashed back to the nest yet might be an indication she is not completely in broody mode yet. If she gets back on the nest you might want to stick some cool packs underneath her (wrapped in a tea towel) or give her a quick dunk in some cool water.

Thanks for such a quick reply and what excellent names for your chooks.

Yes i think she is trying to cool down but wondering if that would be common in a broody hen.

Also wondering if the fact she is laying later and later is to do with a rise in hormones.
