Wood chip in eglu run

Recommended Posts

Apologies if this happens to be a regular question, but . . . .

What depth of wood chip is recommended for an eglu run and how often should the wood chip be changed ?

Do folk regularly poo stick the wood chip run ?

We use the chunky playground quality wood chip from 'Flyte So Fancy' as recommended in a thread from this forum.

Any advice appreciated.

Hi Brian,

We are very happy with wood chips. We tried bark first but that got yucky very quickly. We now use wood chips from B&Q. We aim for the natural ones, but sometimes have to settle for the terracota ones and the hens have a fake tan on their legs for a while  . The dye has no ill effects other than that.

We covered out permanet run with heavy duty weed proof membrane (heavy duty stuff used on drives). Cheaper stuff frays when the hens are digging. We put old car mats under the "pecking zone" near the grubs and then cover the lot with chips to about 1 to 1 1/2 inches deep.

Each week my OH hoses the chips down and rakes them through. When they are getting smelly and the caked layer of dust below the chips has built up we just sweep out the old stuff and replace it. The old chips go on the flower beds as a mulch. This happens 3 -4 times a year, depending on wear and tear. It does need replacing quicker during the winter.
