Olly
Productive pets for me too. I am absolutely with you, beach chook - they will live out their retirement in comfort once they stop laying, get treatment if they're ill provided it is beneficial and I'll be sad when one of them dies, but it won't upset me as much as if something happened to the cat. They are hugely entertaining, they do have different personalities, but they are garden pets, not house pets. I made a policy decision before I got them - home treatment, antibiotics if they're ill but likely to recover, but no operations or major treatments; I think the stress would outweigh the benefit. I love animals but I'm very clear that there's a distinction between us and them. It's easy to confuse what WE want, with what is best for them. I don't have the time or space to rear chickens for meat, and I don't think I could deal with the despatching, but I admire those who do. I probably wouldn't give those ones names, though!
