Guest
OK, Mum (formerly the anti-chicken) is sick of having to hose down the patio and garden furniture outside her kitchen. Our garden is HUGE but the chooks dash into this area to scavenge or just see what we have in our hands when we go out of the back door. So we want to put it out of bounds, leaving them just the walk in run, and 1/4 acre of garden to play in.... I thought we could have a picket fence put across the edge of the lawn with a couple of liftable sections over the path/patio for easy access for both us and my beloved ride on mower, James bikes, garden trolley etc. We would also have to put a bit of net on one end of the summerhouse verandah. Although it has now been suggested that the chooks might just roost on the picket fence as they jump over it.... Second idea is Omlet netting, it'll be a so and so to put up as the lawn is SOLID clay - either swamp like or as at present so dry and hard it actually has crevasses in. It would also look rather temporary and ramshackle and we would stil need to do something else across the path by the summerhouse and my patio. Any ideas? Sandychick
I think it's a case of deciding whether you want a practical fence or if you want to make a feature of it. The chickens gave me a great excuse to put this fence in at each end. They have the middle of the garden keeping them off the veg at the top and away from my kitchen door! (please excuse the garden - it was a jungle when I moved in) I wouldn't like to pay for this fencing for 1/4 acre though!! For that area, I would probably go for an electric fence to keep them safe as well?? They would easily jump a 4 - 5ft picket fence if they saw something tasty the other side. Guest
Thanks - the fencing only needs to go over part of the garden, I am happy for them to have access to my patio although I would prefer to keep them off the kitchen doorstep. TBH they congregate where we are, which is Mums patio! So your fence keeps them out OK does it?
Sandychick
So your fence keeps them out OK does it? It does, but I'm sure they would be able to get over it if they really wanted to. The hight of the meshed bit is only about 4.5 ft. I thought I would have to mesh the next bit up but it seems ok. They have never been out of their area and don't seem interested in whats on the other side! They all seem quite happy scratching about at ground level trying to find something green that they haven't eaten yet! It might be a bit more difficult with yours as they already know where the kitchen door is, they will probably make more effort to get to it!
