bantams and chickens?

Recommended Posts

I currently have 3 chickens. After they have all started to lay I was planning on getting some pekin bantams. I read in a book that preferably they should have their own coop, but thats not an option for us. Will introducing the bantams disrupt my chickens egg laying? What is the problem with them mixing? Will they get on okay?

If someone with bantams could answer these questions id be really grateful

we have 3 chickens and 2 bantams and they get along fabulously, but we had the bantams first and introduced the other hens to them slowly..

i imagine that because your hens are already established then they may be less keen on accepting some little ones into their flock.

if you are not able to have two coops, you need to think carefully about how you would manage the introductions and what you will do if things don't work out. sorry if that sounds pessimistic, but chicken bullying is very stressfull and traumatic (for the owners as well as the chickens!).

can't really answer about the effect on your big girls laying, mine lay 6 days out of 7 but our bantams are another story  one bantam has NEVER laid a thing and the other laid 14 eggs (one a day for two weeks) then went broody and has never laid since!!
