Cazjohn
Hi All, Two of my new BHWT girls are limping. Nearly all of my new girls have got odd sized legs - one leg much thicker than the other - which is odd. Limpy Loo is like a small round ball with no tail, hardly any feathers (although now improving) and one stick thin leg and one fat leg, she manages to get around OK with a sort of running hop! Other limpy(yet to be named) has a very swollen foot which she doesn't like putting down, can't see any evidence of bumblefoot or injury, we've bathed it and sprayed it with anti-bac. But when I touched her back claw she leaped in the air and it started bleeding. I think it will be a trip to the Vets just wondered if anyone had any thoughts Thanks Caroline Edited October 28, 2008 by Guest
Egluntyne
I'd give them a calcium supplement. A trip to the vets is probably a good idea, in case Limpy has an infection.

Cazjohn
Thanks Sandy I'll keep that in mind, funny thing is we originally spent a year looking for a Vet with experience of chickens! Travelled great distances with our poor little souls. I had phoned our local Vet who looks after the Cat and Rabbits and they said they were unable to treat chickens! Then on a routine visit with the Bunnies just mentioned this again and he said he'd kept Chickens himself and would be happy to treat! Cazjohn
Just a quick update! Still got two limping chickens Vet now thinks Rusty has arthritis but they've both feathered up beautifully and we keep them in a separate area during the day so they don't get hassled by my other meanies! Had to take Matt Willis to the vets as well (2nd mortgage now on vets bills!) he thinks she has liver/kidney failure. She has similar symptoms of Peritonitis but he's pretty sure its not that as she's squishy underneath but not tender. Shes fine in herself at the moment and he says it's very early stages but unable to treat, so we'll keep an eye on her. Would be grateful for help if anyone has any experience of this she's an exbatt probably about 3.5/4 years old.
sandyhas3chucks
My only experience is with dogs! The liver being the only organ(apart from skin) that regenerates itself, so with Liver support ie not putting extra strain on it it can do some repair to itself. as the kidneys & livers remove toxins from the body then I guess making sure they don't have to work too hard does this. with dogs you would put them on a special diet either nasty expensive stuff from vet or a homemade one (this is not hard for dogs) Hope this little knowledge helps a little & i hope someopne knowledgeable comes along soon. oh therer are some homeopathic remedies.I can't recall just now. agin hope someone comes in soon! Rnica for the arthritic one though 3x daily. buy weleda though as melt inthe mouth type.
Cazjohn
Thanks Sandy, Rusty's on another course of Baytril and I'm keeping Matt Willis on a simple diet and tucking her away in the hospital wing of a warm shed at night!
