how to tell if shellless or stuck inside

Recommended Posts

So chickens lay eggs with shells, thin shells soft shells and (no shells) a while back had soft shell no yolk,in the eve just before bed but yolk perfectly out in the morning.

Hen laid shell less egg once but shell was hanging out of bottom, which I assisted out oh so carefully....

So did the last shell less one this evening have a soft shell yet to emerge, by morning nothing in following 2 hours but she looks like she may be trying.or sick or dead chook in the morning? Scarey :(

or will she pop out like nothing happened?

It can all happen so quickly, one minute happy healthy hen, next unhappy puffed up, straining.

AS this happened only an hour after her bed mate (the one I thought I had caused the prolapse on) Could this be shell drop syndrome.

One of the other 2 has been laying softees all week , despite all my best efforts of feeding her separately as well as with mate to get all supplements in her. (she seems healthy bar a bare tum where I assumed sleeping in nest box esp on wet egg has not helped, And hasn't fully featherd up yet since rescue.

The shell was expelled by morning, poor things it is such hard work for them.

I have been using shell max for calcium. but got a little complacent thinking only the one consistent (at the time) soft layer needed it all the time& had been giving it to her on some cheese to be sure she was getting it and made no difernce. am wondering if it needs to be in water to be absorbed properly. So was going to try the limestone in food that I see you recomending.(this chook also had a limp, hence thinking calcium deficiency.,Limp seems to be going thjough since the increase. though not the eggs, so thinking body using 1st. (she is well so not stressing) :)

I think that they all seem to lay good uns when they have had a lot of grated cheese, but don't want to overdo things.

They have been getting cod liver oil for about 3 weeks now, do a wet mash for them, meal worms as often as I think I will chuck em a handful.

Also Poutry spice

Battles sometimes either in water or wet mash

Thanks for help Egluntine :)
