KarmaMama
Just had a really sad experience All our chooks were running around just fine about two hours ago, then when one of my daughters friends went out to see them, Bessie the Wellsummer was dead in the run. My 10 year old daughter, who is the one who looks after them like babies, is really upset and asking me why, but unfortunately I have no clue. She has been laying beautiful brown eggs right up to this morning, though she has been popping out some huge ones and a fair few double yolkers too. It's kind of shocked us all - I know these things happen, but it makes you feel like you did something wrong. I'm guessing you can't bury hens in your back garden, what do you do with them? I had promised her a eglu with 2 Cochins as she really wants to have a go at showing them (she is really passionate about her brood) so I guess I better make good on my promise. Egluntyne
Sad news. I'm sorry to hear it. You can put her in a couple of black bags in the bin. Not a very dignified end I always feel, although an option. Defra advise against burning other than in high tech incinerators, and don't encourage burial. Many of us do bury them, although it is a good idea to cover the spot with a few heavy boulders.

kirbyhouse
I am so sorry. I know it hurts but I know you didnt do anything wrong. My vet told me they can switch off if they feel like it Good luck to your daughter - you're a good Mum. We contacted the company that collects from the local vet - wasnt as dignified as we would have wished but the vets wont take them and I didnt want to bury her in the garden. Take care and chin up. KarmaMama
Thank you all so much for your kind words. Bessie is now in the far corner of the back garden, underneath the honeysuckle, bless. She is in about 3 feet down (just in case) and a rock on top. Abigail has slowly come to terms with it and in a way it is a learning curve of life, so not all bad. The other chooks are charging around as normal and popping out eggs at a rocking rate - so all is well in the coup again. J x
