Anyone else watching the QE2 farewell?

Recommended Posts

We are all watching with fond memories. My first cruise (and James') was on the QE2 a couple of years ago. It was a fantastic experience especially as we got upgraded right up to the top level and had a lovely room and dinner in the exclusive Queens Grill. I also got a bridge tour as I wrote to the Captain saying James would like to meet him. It was very special.

Our second trip was less special as the service we got in our restaurant was terrible - our seating was awful, not what we'd asked for and they couldn't change it. The ordering for my vegitarian meals was all over the place - on our last night we didn't even bother and just went to the Lido (cafeteria style). Other aspects were wonderful but many people that voyage were saying it was downhill from previous voyages. Also the ventilation was very poor and we were noticing more that areas were smokey. But I had a favorite spot that I liked to sit in and read my bok.

But all of her passengers were very forgiving of the shabbyness of this grand old lady - she has a charm which none of the other ships have and will be sadly missed.

Yes I prefer the bigger new QM2, she is amazing but I'm not sure I'm worry about the new "Elizabeth" - she's not even a liner but a ship built to plan - same as the Victoria - although the Cunard treatment does mean their public rooms are beautiful.

Oh - last year when we took our last trip on her I promised James we would visit her in Dubai - so I guess I'll be seeing her again!

I think your memories of her are probably more personal than most of us.:lol:

I saw it on the evening news and thought it strange that she is being retired so soon as I remember all the hullaballoo of when she was launched and that really doesn't seem so very long ago! :(

Oooh they were talking about memorabilia and I just remembered I forgot to give my key back on that first voyage and it's on a lovely big keyring, not the sort you could buy onboard either - she had old fashioned locks on her doors whereas the new ships use your cruise card like hotels.
