Dawn T-B
Hi Some more advice please?........... I am getting into a routine and really enjoying my chucks (wow do they like mealworms but that's another story). I'll try and get organised enough to post some pics so you can meet them all, but in the meantime, I have been reading about scaly leg mites - am I meant to be putting vaseline on my girls legs to prevent this when I do my regular check of the girls? Also, I wormed them this week for the first time with Verm X, when do i need to do this again? thanks Dawn
Ain't Nobody Here
Hello Dawn . I'm not an expert on chicken ailments (we need Egluntine!) but I don't think you put vaseline on unless they actually get scaley leg mite. I don't think it's a very common ailment but you're right to be vigilant for all beasties/creepycrawlies. I've lapsed on the health checks somewhat - I occasionally check their botties for lice (we've had them once) but otherwise just keep an eye on their general behaviour. I do know that Omleteers don't really rate Vermex (sorry!) but I wouldn't worry if you have a big supply of it. Flubenvet is really the wormer to get but perhaps you could use up your Vermex then change to Flubenvet. (Do a search on the forum and you'll find out loads about both wormers.) Hope that helps a bit (but hopefully someone will confirm/deny what I've said about the vaseline .)
sambee
Is it not a good idea to change your wormer when you've finished a bottle and it comes round to doing it again? As every animal is gonna have some worms no matter what, the wormer only kills off and prevents the majority, but some will get more resilient to a brands certain formula thus making it less effective, but if the wormer is alternated, you're probably gonna have a higher success rate. Smite me if I'm wrong, I don't know much about chickens as of yet, but that's generally the advice with horses and dogs.
cordelia
never saw anything about putting vaseline on for scaley legs.. in my chicken keeping book (the Omlet one) it says to cover scaley legs in surgical spirit..(dip in )...but only if they have the problem...as a cure rather than preventative I certqainly dont fancy trying to get my three and put vaseline on their legs every week... but then I'm lazy although I'm sure it must work as a preventer.. I have vermex...Its says to use for three days running...and then I think it says once a month...(pellets, not the liquid, although I think that is the same..).. thats if you are going to continue using it.. mostin
You only need to put vaseline on if they actually get scaley leg mite. One of my girls came with the condition, as I adopted her, but she was so wriggly I couldn't treat her with vaseline or surgical spirit. I used Xeno two hundred ,not licensed for poultry in the uk, as you just spot that on the back of their neck. There is an egg withdrawal period of two weeks with this treatment, but it worked really well.
