speckled hen
Hi everyone I am still waiting for one of my lovely girls to lay me an egg. Dh and I are wondering about lighting the hen house. Will this help? they go to bed at dusk and get up around 7.30, so not sure if they are suffering from a lack of light. Mind you since we put them in walk in run and cube thay tend to spend a lot of the day sat in the cube!! Thanks in advance for your help x
judith67
I have a wooden coop not a cube, but the only time mine are in it are to sleep or lay. The rest of the time they are in the run ie between 6.30am and 4.30pm. They never go into the coop during the day except to lay an egg. Maybe they haven't got used to the run yet? speckled hen
I wondered the same thing, they come out to eat and drink then sometimes they stay out for a while but mainly they go back in the cube. I have put hemccore down, I wonder if they don't like the feel of it? The other thought was that the run needs some thing to entertain them, any ideas welcome! Still no eggs, one day! Ain't Nobody Here
I don't thinking lighting the house is generally thought of as a good idea as the shorter days and reduced laying gives the girls a well deserved break (well, not yours, obviously but you know what I mean ). You'll just have to be patient! I wouldn't have thought the hemcore would be a problem - hens aren't that fussy what's underfoot! For entertainment you can put perches in the run for them (branches or old roosting bars/shoe racks etc) and you can also hang up veg or fruit for them. Mine go mad for corn on the cob and apples. Some people use dog treat balls filled with goodies (mine didn't know what to do with it when I tried it ).
speckled hen
That's great thanks for the reply, I wasn't sure about the lighting option but knew I would get advice on here, these chooks do keep me puzzled, they are fab!!! I will set about making a little chicken entertainment for my girls!
