Posted November 26, 2008 Share Posted November 26, 2008 In America, tis the tradition to make sock monkeys from Rockford red heel socks - heavy duty brown and cream marl work socks. The heel gives it a lovely monkey mouth. The company that makes them sells every pair with instructions on how to make a sock elephant and a sock monkey with them. I got my first ever pairs in the post this week from ebay and have made this pretty large monkey for the OH's birthday. I had to squeeze his head with string to give the hat something to sit on, but I think it may be my most 'normal' monkey yet! He actually looks like a monkey rather than a nightmarish freak of a toy! I've got a pair of Rockford socks to turn into a monkey too - i'm not very clever-fingered so i don't know what the result will be As a backup, I got YD a 'real' sock monkey ready made from the States and he's gorgeous! I also got her sock monkey faced slippers AND sock monkey pyjamas (she's a huge fan of Tony Millionaire's sock monkey graphic novels). And Taschen do a big bright sock monkey calendar and also a thin tiny one which you can rip apart into bookmarks (on purpose) which is very cool. Sock monkeys need to look a tiny bit wrong so I'm sure your one will come out fine. Do post pics won't you?
