Nearly bald chicken! Help!

Recommended Posts

Hi i haven't been on the forum for ages, my chickens have been great. However, around two weeks ago my two white stars who are amazing layers, stopped laying. I then noticed lots of feathers in the cube, so assumed they were malting. J Lo has returned to laying and looks really good, however, Milly looks absolutely terrible and i am not sure if its just a malt or not. She has got major bald patches, where you can see the spiky part of the feather near the skin, is this new feathers or old? I have only had them 10 months, so haven't been through a malt yet. She seems to be acting normal, eating ok etc, but her crest is shrunk and really pale. All her tail feathers are gone, and most feathers around her neck and chest. I haven't seen either of my other two pecking her at all. I have given them all some tonic in there water. Any help would be appreciated please.

The spikey parts sound as if they could be new feathers emerging.

They are furled up in little white casings to start with and can look a bit alarming.

To help her feather up a bit quicker, you could try giving her extra protein, either dolphin friendly tuna (rinsed), chick crumbs, scrambled egg(!), organic cat food, not poultry based.

It might be worth worming the flock too.
