Pale comb

Recommended Posts

Hi

One of my girls (Hetty) has had a very pale comb for about a week. She seems fine, still eating and drinking, Should I be concerned?

Also I don't think that she has ever laid an egg! We have had her for nearly 2 years now and in all that time I can't be sure whether she has laid or not. It's not a problem for me, she is one of my favorites (shh don't tell the others), but is it good for her? I have spoken to someone who as kept chickens for years and they said that as long as she seems healthy not to worry.

Has anyone else had this problem?

Have you wormed her recently, and checked her for lice and mites? Any of those factors could prevent her from laying. Might be worth a try.

Also, too many treats and not enough layers pellets can have an effect, so I'd cut out the "junk food" and give her just pellets for a while and see if it makes a difference. :D

It is probably linked to her hormones. My pure bred light sussex has stopped laying for the winter and her comb has gone from cherry red to dusty grey with just a hint of red underneath. When your girl comes back into lay again, (by doing all of suggested by egluntine above ) I'm sure her comb will redden up again too. I'm waiting for my girls to change colour at the moment to let me know when my first egg from her this year might be on the way :D
