Broken beak!

Recommended Posts

My sister has just phoned me to ask my advice;

her cockerel's beak is hanging off on one side! He was fine this morning, but is quite an aggressive boy so she doesn't know if he has attacked something or has had a collision or what...but his beak is partially hanging off...I have no idea...I wasn't even sure if beaks could regrow and everything I can find online just refers to beak trimming with regards to poultry rearing.

Obviously she is going to take him to the vet but should she phone an emergency one? will he be in a lot of pain? He is crowing alot and she is very upset..ANY advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Kristine

I really don't know what to tell you. Instincts would say if he's acting abnormally then he could very well be in pain.

Did she manage to get him to a vets? Hope he'll be okay xxx

Beaks do re grow but it just depends on where the fracture is and whether the 'BEAK BED"

like a nail bed has been damaged.

In the past I have glued back broken duck, swan and peacock beaks but never a chook's.

If it is permanently damaged he will need a prosthesis ... don't laugh, they have been made out of fibre glass kits.

Get him to the vet.

At the least he won't be able to eat properly with a beak that's awry or missing.

Let us know how you get on

Just wanted to let anyone who read my earlier message and the nice people who responded know, that my sister's cockerel is ok. She took him to the vet Monday morning and the vet removed the broken piece of his beak. He didn't file it neat (as I have discovered can be done!) as the broken part was quite long and therefore the nerves would be very sensitive. The beak will grow back and she just needs to keep an eye on his eating and maybe give him soft food that he can peck at without discomfort. He (Horace) seems fine otherwise and is going about his business as usual. Still not sure how it happened...she thinks he may have been kicked by one of the horses, probably when he was trying to steal its food! - not called Horace for nothing!

Thanks again for the responses, feel guilty as I only seem to come on this forum when I have a problem! but you are always so nice and helpful when I do.

Kristine xx
