flowerangelk8x
hi, we have had our girls for 4 days! from omlet, one and one ! great fun one of them we think the (as her comb is bigger and redder) has laid two egg! unfortunatly they have very strange thin shells,. the egg is perfect inside but it feels like its in a bag not a shell? very strage. is this normal for first eggs or are we doing somthing wrong, or is she ill? we are feeding them on omlet, pellets, bran, corn and grit? any advice would be gratefully received? thanks kate
Old Speckled Hen
Two of mine did this a few times when they first started to lay. I don't know if these are what everybody here calls a "softee" as these make a chook ill. Mine were perfectly OK. One of my aged hens laid a shell-less egg once the same day she laid a normal one. Kittycat
Sounds like you're doing all the right things. I read somewhere that chickens can lay soft eggs if they have a shock and also may lay a few soft eggs when they first start laying so I wouldn't worry too much. Give her a few more days to settle in. If it's still a problem, you could perhaps try mixing some of the grit into mashed potato or a porridge made with milk and give it to the girls as a treat in the afternoon - that way you know they've had a good intake. I think I might have read somewhere that limestone (??) flour can help - somebody with more experience is bound to clarify! Good luck and enjoy!
